On Monday, police announced that former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis, aged 35, was discovered deceased at a mansion in Florida. Authorities responded to a call from the residence on the 6000 block of SW 178th Avenue after the house assistant found Davis' body at the Southwest Ranches' home, according to a statement from the Davie Police Department. The department indicated that initial findings suggest no foul play was involved in the incident. However, specific details regarding the circumstances of Davis' passing have not been disclosed. Property records from Broward County reveal that the nearly $3 million home is owned by Adaline Davis, reportedly identified as Davis' grandmother by NBC South Florida. Additional records indicate that Vontae Davis resided at the property. The Broward County medical examiner's office stated on Monday afternoon that it is conducting an investigation into Davis' demise.



The agency stated in a release that "Further information is currently unavailable pending a comprehensive examination, additional testing, and studies. The investigation to determine the cause and manner of death may require up to 90 days for completion."

Davis, who had a career in the NFL spanning from 2009 until his retirement in 2018, played for the Miami Dolphins, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Buffalo Bills.

Tributes began pouring in Monday afternoon from each of Davis' former teams, as well as from the league itself.

The NFL expressed its condolences, stating, "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Vontae Davis.In one post, he shared a picture of Davis wearing a Colts uniform with a heart emoji placed above it.

In another post, Irsay wrote, "I am incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Vontae Davis. He was a wonderful individual, teammate, and player. My prayers go out to Vontae's family."


Miami drafted Davis as the 25th pick in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. Prior to his professional career, he played college football at the University of Illinois.

In 2018, Davis made headlines and surprised many when he retired during halftime of the Buffalo Bills' game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In a statement regarding his abrupt decision to retire mid-game, Davis said, "This is not how I envisioned ending my NFL career. However, while on the field today, reality hit me hard and fast. It became clear that I should no longer be out there. I want to express that I meant no disrespect to my teammates or coaches."



Davis earned Pro Bowl honors twice during his NFL career.

Tiresias McCall, aged 46, formerly served as the dean of students at Dunbar High School in Washington D.C., which happens to be Davis' alma mater.

In 2019, author McCall shared his first meeting with retired NFL cornerback Vontae Davis. Davis visited his former school to talk about their book, "The Middle School Rules of Vontae Davis". The book tells the story of Davis' road to the NFL, including the obstacles he overcame. One major challenge was growing up in a home impacted by drug addiction. Fortunately, Davis' grandmother, Adaline, adopted him and his siblings to keep them from being separated in foster care.

Describing Davis, McCall remarked, "He was an incredible, compassionate, and enthusiastic young man. He spoke from the heart, with an infectious smile and boundless energy. The students were captivated by his every word."


McCall noted that Davis' background resonated deeply with student-athletes who encountered similar struggles at home. "His story served as inspiration for them, showing that despite adversity, they too could succeed," he added.

Author McCall: ? chooses to remember Vontae Davis with a celebration of his life and accomplishments. "He lived a full life and inspired many people," McCall emphasized. Davis' legacy will be one of inspiration and blessing."
